Using the Pneumatic method to estimate embolism resistance in species with long vessels: A commentary on the article “A comparison of five methods to assess embolism resistance in trees”

چکیده

Comparisons among methods are essential to validate plant traits measured across studies. However, a rigorous analysis is complex task that needs take into account not only the principle of method and its correct use, but also inherent intraspecific trait variability, something we feel fully considered by Sergent et al. (2020). They compared Bench dehydration, MicroCT, Pneumatic using three long-vesseled species found divergence these methods. As key finding, colleagues reported unreliable estimates ?50 for Olea europaea when in such species. Here, tested this finding measuring independently vulnerability curves O. europaea. Our results reinforce viability estimate embolism species, as already others. Briefly, discuss important procedures encourage further experiments, way know better limitations available improve our understanding about water relations.

Testing the plant pneumatic method to estimate xylem embolism resistance in stems of temperate trees.

Methods to estimate xylem embolism resistance generally rely on hydraulic measurements, which can be far from straightforward. Recently, a pneumatic method based on air flow measurements of terminal branch ends was proposed to construct vulnerability curves by linking the amount of air extracted from a branch with the degree of embolism. We applied this novel technique for 10 temperate tree spe...
